Identifying Sustainability Issues for Soymeal and Beef Production Chains Organic Eprints
Kamali, Farahnaz Pashaei; Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; de Boer, Imke J.M.; Stolz, Hanna; Jahrl, Ingrid; Garibay, Salvador V.; Jacobsen, Ray; Driesen, Toon; Oude Lansink, Alfons G. J. M..
The expansion of livestock production throughout the world has led to increased demand for high protein animal feed. This expansion has created economic benefits for livestock farmers and other actors in the chain, but also resulted in environmental and social side effects. This study aims to identify a set of sustainability issues that cover the environmental, economic and social dimensions of soymeal and beef production chains. The method applied combines the results of multiple studies, including a literature review and stakeholder surveys. Stakeholder surveys were conducted for three different interest groups (business, consumers, and other stakeholders) and two geographical regions (Latin America and the European Union). Our results reveal that the...

IFOAM Training Manual: Training Manual for Organic Agriculture in the Arid and Semi-arid Tropics Organic Eprints
Weidmann, Gilles; Kilcher, Lukas; Garibay, Salvador V..
The first IFOAM Training Manual for Organic Agriculture in the Tropics (the Basic Manual) was published in 2004. The Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) together with partners of the organic movement in the Tropics were commissioned by IFOAM to complete two new training manuals that build on the Basic Manual. The new IFOAM training manuals address the two basic climatic zones of the Tropics, the Arid and Semi-Arid Tropics, and the Humid Tropics. For both new manuals, already existing material was collected, screened and condensed into comprehensive training manuals. Additionally, a large number of farmers, trainers and scientists were asked for their experience. Partner institutions from the Tropics actively collaborated in the development...

La Agricultura Orgánica como Instrumento para el Éxito de los Productores Organic Eprints
Garibay, Salvador V..

Market Opportunities and Challenges for Indian Organic Products Organic Eprints
Garibay, Salvador V.; Jyoti, Katke.
Organic agriculture offers trade opportunities for farmers in the developing and developed countries. This market of organic products is expected to grow globally in the coming years and high growth rates over the medium term (from 10-15 to 25-30 %) are expected (Yussefi and Willer, 2002). This organic market expansion makes it possible for farmers to reap the benefits of a trade with relatively high price premiums (Yussefi and Willer, 2002). However, this market is not very well known to most farmers, especially those living in the developing countries. Furthermore, information about it is not readily available to farmers in the developing countries. The absence of sufficient technical and market information and financial support also means that few...

Movimiento Orgánico Mundial y El Mercado Europeo Organic Eprints
Garibay, Salvador V..

Organic beekeeping in Mexico Organic Eprints
Garibay, Salvador V.; Vandame, Rémy.
Mexico is often described as a cornucopia, a land with high diversity in ecosystems, crops, fauna and flora. These are superb preconditions for organic honey production. Already the pre-hispanic Maya cultures produced honey from the native stingless bee (Meliponini) before the Spanish introduced European honey bee (Apis mellifera L). The main beekeeping product in Mexico is honey. Mexico ranks sixth in the world in honey production (57,000 t) and third as an exporter (25,000 t).

The leading countries are Argentina (2'777'959 hectares), Brazil (1'765'793 hectares) and Uruguay (930'965 hectares). The highest shares of organic agricultural land are in the Dominican Republic and Uruguay with more than six percent and in Mexico and Argentina with more than two percent. Most organic production in Latin America is for export. Important crops are tropical fruits, grains and cereals, coffee and cocoa, sugar and meats. Most organic food sales in the domestic markets of the countries occur in major cities, such as Buenos Aires and São Paulo. Fifteen countries have legislation on...

Organic Farming in Latin America and the Caribbean Organic Eprints
Garibay, Salvador V.; Ugas, Roberto.
In Latin America, 260’000 producers managed 8.1 million hectares of agricultural land organically in 2008. This constitutes 23 percent of the world’s organic land. The leading countries are Argentina (4 million hectares), Brazil (1.8 million hectares), and Uruguay (930'965 hectares). The highest shares of organic agricultural land are in the Dominican Republic and Uruguay with more than six percent and in Argentina with three percent. Most organic products from Latin American countries (90 percent) are sold on the European, North American or Japanese markets. Popular goods are especially those that cannot be produced in these regions, as well as off-season products. Thus, the development of robust local markets is still a major challenge, without which the...
